We’ve been collecting feedback on our recruitment process for a long time. Recently, we decided to compile highlights from the past year or so — what applicants have appreciated and what has raised eyebrows. Here’s a breakdown by theme:

1. Human approach & communication

We genuinely care that every applicant feels seen. We keep in touch, explain the next steps, and provide feedback via calls.

2. Clear process

When the journey is transparent, the experience is better. We outline the steps already in the job ad — and stick to them.

“Recruitment was very effective and it was clearly explained. First was the HR-interview, then coding test and finally meeting in the office.”

“I felt very well informed throughout the process. I also appreciated the interview in person (not so common anymore).”

3. Flexibility & human connection

Schedules change. We offer multiple time slots and are flexible with illnesses or travel.

“It is good that you can choose the best time for yourself via the online calendar… I really liked the flexibility with the scheduling.”

“Quick response was a plus — it didn’t feel like an automated reply.”

4. The VALA vibe

Many applicants have praised the kindness, authenticity, and positive energy in our process — exactly what we hope to be known for and want to protect as we grow.

“We had a really nice conversation.”

“Just have to say: your recruitment process was absolutely lovely! (I didn’t expect anything less, but it still exceeded expectations). Anni is incredibly positive and amazing at follow-up. She kept everything running smoothly throughout!”

“Overall I felt very positive from the process, people and VALA and would have considered myself really lucky to be part of the team.”

5. Feedback to applicants

Naturally, applicants appreciate receiving personalized feedback — even if brief. We do our best already and want to keep improving.

“It’s good to give feedback to every applier.”

“Feedback felt relatively personal, which is good. Nowadays, most replies are generated by AI.”

“The way responding to the applicant is good, also if possible help to give the notes saying the areas for improvement.”

The thorns – honest but tough feedback

In the spirit of transparency, we’re also sharing some of the more negative comments. Sometimes mistakes happen, or the process itself needs work. Here are a few examples:

“At least give some valid reason why you are not going forward with my application”

“It wasn’t clear why I have been rejected.”

“I was surprised to see only the lowest/ most basic position advertised in English. There were 3 other positions also available, which were only in Finnish, even though I was probably qualified for those too.”

“It would be really nice to know the process behind the shortlisting process. If the candidate has all the requirements fulfilled in CV, there could be a short interview to assess them before rejecting the application. Some feedback on improvement would also be highly appreciated.”

“It would be helpful if the relevant position is offered with a VISA sponsorship. In today’s connected world, it would be difficult to assume.”

“The company focuses on finnish speaking personnel instead of experience and skills on their recruitment. Finland is being a multinational country and company should also improve on stereotype.”

“Even strong applications seem to disappear in the process. Important to ensure good ones get properly considered.”

“Didn’t get far in the process, so can’t really comment. Felt a bit like the same generic stuff as other companies.”

Final thoughts

Thank you to everyone who has shared feedback — even the tough stuff! For us, recruitment is about connecting with people, not just ticking boxes. That’s probably why we get more roses than thorns. But for the same reason, a few thorns are inevitable — every human interaction has variables. Have ideas on how we could do better? We’re always open to hearing them!
